When Iran decided last week to reject a very generous offer by the United Kingdom, France and Germany to supply Iran with Uranium to produce electricity so long as Iran did enrich its own Uranium, the inaction and vacillation of the Bush White House on this issue became all the more dangerous.
As the Washington Post stated in a editorial " No reason still exists to give Iran the benefit of the doubt." Yet President Bush who was so anxious to invade Iraq based on rumors about WMD production and forged memos has been silent on this issue, is ignoring Iran despite that fact that the CIA confirms that Iran is developing an Atomic weapon. Is Bush really a coward?
It would appear he is fearful of Iran based on the almost constant inaction from his administration on this matter. Bush and his State Department deferred to the Europeans on this important matter because under Bush, the United States has grown so weak in the eyes of the world community both in terms of credibility and military might, that Europe can hold a much bigger stick to a rogue nation than can the U.S. Perhaps because of boondagle in Iraq, Bush's reaction to Iran is irrelevant in the eyes of the world. Maybe they are looking to France and Germany for leadership, instead of the USA?
With two plus years of hindsight this makes Condeleeza Rice's statement to "punish the French and ignore the Germans," look all the more foolish, considering we must now depend on these two nations to protect our national security since our President is AWOL. She looks just as silly as the Democrats from Florida who advocated the renaming of French Fries, "Freedom Fries." Then again in George W. Bush's America, beating up on France may be the way we mask our inferiority complex with "old europe" as those nations are clearly more relevent in the geopolitics of the world today.
